Safford is located in the Gila River Valley, east of Tucson in the southeastern portion of the state. The town is situated on the south bank of the Gila River and the foothills of the Pinaleno Mountains begin about five miles southeast of town. Mt. Graham, the highest peak in the mountain range, and its companion peaks have a definite influence on the weather of the region by reducing winter precipitation. The Colorado National Forest is just ten miles south of Safford and offers many recreational opportunities. Other points of interest include the Mt. Graham and Pinaleno Mountains Swift Trail, a 36-mile scenic drive (one of many in the area,) that features picnicking and camping spots. Discovery Park is a 160-acre world class attraction that features the Gov Aker Observatory, an 1880s narrow gauge railroad and the Nature's Hideaway Riparian Wetlands. Roper Lake State Park, just south of Safford, includes a mineral hot springs, camping and day-use picnicking areas. Several annual events are held in the town of Safford, including a downtown street fair, the Annual Gila Valley Cowboy Poet Roundup, an annual Harvest Festival, the Annual Christmas Light Parade and Tree Lighting and the Annual Gila Valley Family Festival, held each Memorial Day weekend.
