Nutrioso
is a tiny community located in the White Mountains of Apache County, which is located in the northeast corner of Arizona. It is approximately nine miles north of Alpine, Arizona. Once a logging and ranching town, legend has it that early settlers killed beaver and bear in this place, so they named it "nutria" for beaver and "oso" for bear. As of the 2000 census, the entire Apache County had a population of 69,432 residents and the county seat is St. Johns. Apache County contains parts of the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and the Petrified Forest National Park. The Petrified Forest is the largest forest of petrified wood from the Triassic time on Earth, and nearby, the Painted Desert attracts thousands of visitors each year to its famous formations. Canyon de Chelly National Monument also lies entirely within the Apache County borders. This is where you will find the most spectacular "signature" Southwestern scenery. Prehistoric dwellings, petroglyph trails and archaeological finds are all near the small village of Nutrioso. Mountain lakes and trout streams, hiking, horseback riding, birding and wildlife viewing and "rock hounding" are just some of the activities to enjoy near Nutrioso in the beautiful White Mountains of Northeast Arizona.

The northeastern corner of Arizona has a humid continental climate, due to its' very high altitude. Elevations in this region of the White Mountains reaches 8,000 to 10,000 feet. Arizona generally has a dry climate with little rainfall. The northeastern corner experiences more frequent thunderstorms due to the North American Monsoon. The temperatures here are usually comfortable during the day, and often sunny, but be warned that the sun is very intense in the mountains. Nightly frosts are possible, even in summer, and are an almost daily occurrence from October to May. Snow at the highest elevations can be as much as 100 inches, but is rare in the southern and western lowlands of the state. The plateau region of the northeastern corner of the state receives approximately ten inches of precipitation annually.
