Douglas
is a small town of around 14,000 residents, located right on the U.S. - Mexico border in Cochise County, Arizona. It stands across from the city of Agua, Sonora, Mexico. Douglas is home to the historic Gadsden Hotel, which opened its doors in 1907. This grand five-story, 160-room hotel became a home away from home for cattlemen, ranchers, miners, and businessmen in the young Arizona territory. The hotel was leveled by fire and rebuilt in 1929 and it is recognized as a National Historic Site. The Gadsdens main lobby is set with a solid white Italian marble staircase and four soaring marble columns. An authentic Tiffany stained glass mural extends forty-two feet across one wall of the massive mezzanine and an impressive oil painting by Audrey Jean Nichols is just below the Tiffany window. Vaulted stained glass skylights run the full length of the lobby. Other attractions near the town of Douglas include the quaint town of Bisbee, Arizona, the Chiricahua Monument, Fort Bowie, the old mining town of Tombstone and the Kartchner Caverns State Park There are also several ghost towns near Douglas that make an exciting, fun way to explore the surrounding countryside.

Douglas Weather & Climate

|
The southeast corner of Arizona has a desert climate, but is usually cooler and wetter than the Phoenix desert region due to its' higher elevation. The elevation in southeast Arizona averages 6,000 feet. It has four seasons, with summer and winter being the major ones, and a monsoon that some residents call the "fifth" season. The southern region of Arizona averages 16 inches of rain per year, but experiences a high evapotranspiration, or loss of water. This is the reason for the desert climate classification, in spite of the higher level of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Snow is a very rare occurrence in this region. Temperatures are generally comfortable, with highs in the summer in the 90s and in the 50s and 60s in the wintertime.
