Bisbee
is nestled a mile high in the Mule Mountains of southern Arizona, a little over an hour's drive southeast of Tucson. This historical little town is the county seat for Cochise County, and at one time, it was the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. The community was founded in 1880 as a mining camp, but it quickly became one of the richest mineral sites in the country with an abundance of gold, copper, silver, lead and zinc in the surrounding mountains. By the mid-1970s, the mining operations had stopped and Bisbee was rediscovered by artists, retirees and tourists. Today, it's a thriving community with gourmet restaurants, art galleries, specialty shops and coffeehouses. Bisbee still hasn't quite caught up with modern times and the town contains a wonderful collection of turn of the century Victorian structures. Old miners' boarding houses are now charming bed and breakfast inns, and former saloons are now quaint shops and antique stores. A self-guided walking tour is available (visit the local Chamber of Commerce for a map and information.) Included on the tour is the famous Brewery Gulch, which in its' heyday boasted over 47 saloons and a lively "red light district." Other attractions in town include the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, the Queen Mine Tour and Lavender Pit Open Mine.

Bisbee Weather & Climate
The southeast corner of Arizona has a desert climate, but is usually cooler and wetter than the Phoenix desert region due to its' higher elevation. The elevation in southeast Arizona averages 6,000 feet. It has four seasons, with summer and winter being the major ones, and a monsoon that some residents call the "fifth" season. The southern region of Arizona averages 16 inches of rain per year, but experiences a high evapotranspiration, or loss of water. This is the reason for the desert climate classification, in spite of the higher level of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Snow is a very rare occurrence in this region. Temperatures are generally comfortable, with highs in the summer in the 90s and in the 50s and 60s in the wintertime.
