Tombstone is located in southeast Arizona, about 70 miles southeast of Tucson and 15 miles southwest of the Dragoon Mountains. Situated at an elevation of 4,540 feet, Tombstone is perhaps the world's most renowned old mining camp - famous for being the site of the "Gunfight at the OK Corral." In the late 1870s, a miner by the name of Ed Schieffelin arrived at Camp Huachuca and wandered off to prospect nearby. His comrades told him he would "find his tombstone before finding silver." So when Schieffelin staked his first claim, he named it "Tombstone," and the name stuck. Rumors of the rich strikes in the area soon made Tombstone a boomtown and it incorporated as a village in 1879. By 1881 there were over 7,000 people in town and the population soared to 15,000 by the 1890s. However, Tombstone gained a reputation as a town stepped in violence and lawlessness, with a busy "red light" district and more saloons and gambling houses than any town in the southwest. Today, Tombstone, "The Town Too Tough to Die," takes tourists back in time with its' historic buildings and reenactments of events at "The Ok Corral." Other things to see include the Bird Cage Theater, a saloon and dance hall that opened in 1881, and the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park. There are special events in Tombstone nearly every month of the year, including Territorial Days in March, Wyatt Earp Days in May and Helldorado Days in October.

Tombstone Weather & Climate

The southeast corner of Arizona has a cooler, wetter climate than the central desert regions due to the higher elevation (6,000 feet average.) This area has four seasons, and a monsoon that some residents call the "fifth" season. The southern region of Arizona averages 16 inches of rain per year, but experiences a high evapotranspiration, or loss of water. This is the reason for the desert climate classification, in spite of the higher level of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Snow is a very rare occurrence in this region. Temperatures are generally comfortable, with highs in the summer in the 90s and in the 50s and 60s in the wintertime.
