Parker
is located on the east bank of the Colorado River in western Arizona, near the California border. The Parker "region" contains the city of Parker, Parker South, the Colorado River side of Parker and the communities on the California side. The town was established in 1871 and officially incorporated in 1948. It sits within the northern corner of the Colorado River Indian Tribe Reservation on a mesa overlooking the Colorado River. Parker is situated within the Sonora Desert, near the Gibraltar Mountains to the east and the Whipple and Riverside Mountains to the north and southwest. The Colorado River Indian Tribe Reservation straddles the Colorado River from a point five miles north of Parker to a point 50 miles south and contains over 264,000 acres. Called "The Recreation Boating Capital of the Southwest," visitors affectionately call the area the "Parker Strip," one of the best 16-mile stretches of water for recreational boating and fishing in the country. Everything from canoeing, jet skiing, speedboats and wave runners can be seen on the Colorado River near Parker. It's not surprising that the town's economy is based primarily on tourism. Aside from the river, the town offers great restaurants, campgrounds, an 18-hole golf course, RV parks, hotels, motels and convenient shopping. There are two state parks and one county park in the area, and the Parker Dam, the deepest dam in the world, is one of the community's landmarks. Special events such as boat racing and an annual Bluegrass Festival take place all year long in the Parker area.

The extreme northwest corner of Arizona, in the Lake Havasu region, has an arid desert climate. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any place in the United States. Summer highs generally range between 100 and 122 degrees F. At times, the temperature exceeds 125 degrees F., a scorching, yet dry heat. In winter, the highs range from 63 to 82 degrees F. Frost and snow are virtually unknown in this area. Temperatures do occasionally dip below 40 degrees F. in the winter, but it's not common. The mean annual precipitation is 3.28 inches. Most rain (which isn't much) occurs in December and January. This region has 300 days of sunshine on average each year. The heat is something to consider when planning a trip to this area. If you have heat sensitivities, you should plan to come in the late fall, winter, or early spring.
