Pearce
is located in southern Arizona's Cochise County along Interstate 191 about 85 miles southeast of Tucson. Many consider Pearce a ghost town, but the area is growing and attracting both working and retired residents due to its mild year round climate and proximity to other major towns. Pearce is usually associated with the community of Sunsites, which was established in 1961 and is a completely self-supporting community. The village of Pearce began as a mining town after Jimmy Pearce discovered gold on his property in 1894. At one time the town had a population of over 1,000, with a school, hotel, saloons and a theater, but the mine closed in the 1930s and the town diminished in size. The Amerind Foundation, located about 19 miles from town, is a nonprofit archaeological research center and museum that has a wealth of information on the culture and art of Native Americans. Focused primarily on the Native American culture of the Southwest and Northern Mexico, the museum conducts tours, but it's best to call ahead for days and times. Other attractions include Cochise Stronghold Canyon, located just minutes from Pearce. The Canyon was once a hideout for the Apache Indian Chief Cochise and his warriors and today it's nice picnicking spot and campgrounds.

Pearce Weather & Climate
The southeast corner of Arizona has a cooler, wetter climate than the central desert regions due to the higher elevation (6,000 feet average.) This area has four seasons, and a monsoon that some residents call the "fifth" season. The southern region of Arizona averages 16 inches of rain per year, but experiences a high evapotranspiration, or loss of water. This is the reason for the desert climate classification, in spite of the higher level of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Snow is a very rare occurrence in this region. Temperatures are generally comfortable, with highs in the summer in the 90s and in the 50s and 60s in the wintertime.
