Sierra-Vista is located 70 miles southeast of Tucson, surrounded by the San Pedro River and the Huachuca, Dragoon and Mule Mountains. The name Sierra Vista is Spanish for "Mountain View." The town of Sierra Vista is a thriving community of approximately 40,000 residents and serves as the regional hub for southeastern Arizona. Situated at an elevation of 4,600 feet, the area has a temperate year round climate, lots of sunshine and clean, pure air. Sierra Vista is widely known as one of the premier bird-watching destinations in the country. Nicknamed the "Hummingbird Capital of the United States," birdwatchers flock to nearby Ramsey Canyon Preserve and other local canyons to observe and photograph hundreds of different species of birds. Other recreational opportunities around Sierra Vista include two championship golf courses, public tennis courts, ball fields and community parks. Sierra Vista is also just a short drive to the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, the Coronado National Monument in the Huachuca Mountains, Madera Canyon and the Kartchner Caverns State Park. The town holds several special events throughout the year, including the Pat Hughes Sierra Stampede, an all women's rodeo, usually held in January. There is also the Festival of the Southwest in the spring, the Festival of Color Hot Air Balloon Rally in the fall and Arizona's longest-running holiday parade in December. Sierra Vista is easily reached via Interstate 10 and State Route 90.

Sierra Vista Weather & Climate

The southeast portion of Arizona has a desert climate, but is cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. The elevation in southeast Arizona averages 6,000 feet. It has four seasons, with summer and winter being the major ones, and a monsoon that some residents call the "fifth" season. The southern region of Arizona averages 16 inches of rain per year, but experiences a high evapotranspiration, or loss of water. This is the reason for the desert climate classification, in spite of the higher level of precipitation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Snow is a very rare occurrence in this region. Temperatures are generally comfortable, with highs in the summer in the 90s and in the 50s and 60s in the wintertime.
