Show-Low
is the commercial and tourism hub of the White Mountains of Arizona, located approximately 175 miles northeast of Phoenix. This progressive mid-size community has experienced steady growth in the past ten years and offers an appealing small-town atmosphere and warmth to visitors. Show Low received its' unique name in an unusual way; C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark decided there was not enough room for both of them in their settlement. The two men agreed to let a game of cards decide who was to move. According to the story, Clark said, If you can show low, you win. Cooley turned up the Deuce of Clubs and replied, Show Low it is. Thus the town's motto - Show Low, Arizona: Named For the Turn of a Card." The area has back roads for exploring, crystal clear lakes for swimming, fishing and boating and a superb trail system for hiking. The area is the only place in the world to find the Apache Trout. Nestled among rugged cliffs, mountains and canyons, pines and aspens and diverse wildlife makes Show Low a hiker's paradise. The White Mountains Trail System, near Show Low, is a system of 25 to 30 interconnecting, multi-use trail loops ranging from the town of Vernon on the eastern edge to the community of Clay Springs in the west. Show Low hosts several community events throughout the year, including the annual "Show Low Days Still Cruzin' Car Show," usually held in June.

Northeast Arizona has more of a varied climate than other areas of the state, due to the elevation and diversity of the geographical area. The mountains have much more of a four-season climate, with cold winters and comfortable summers. The lower desert areas are warmer, with little or no snow in the wintertime. The mountains, which reach 8,000 to 10,000 feet in elevation, average 34 inches of snow per year, but can have as much as 100 inches. Northeast Arizona gets about 14 inches of rain per year. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 60. On average, there are 276 days of sunshine per year, and keep in mind that the sun is very intense in the mountains. The July high, in the lower elevations, is around 88 degrees. In the mountains, nightly frosts are possible, even in summer, and they're an almost daily occurrence from October to May.
