Forest-Lakes
is a small mountain town about two hours northeast of Phoenix. It's situated at an elevation of 7,570 feet near the Woods Canyon Lake area. Forest Lakes is a relaxing get-away and one of best hideaways in the state of Arizona. The Sitgreaves National Forest is at the town's back door and six trout lakes are nearby. Considered one of the "busiest lakes above the Moggollon Rim," the 55-acre Woods Canyon Lake offers small boat rentals and fishing, lots of campgrounds and a general store. No swimming is allowed in the lake per the Arizona Game and Fish Department. There is a boat launch area for small boats and canoes. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest ranges in elevation from 3,500 feet to nearly 11,500 feet and provides hiking trails, horseback riding and cross country skiing in winter. There are eight cold water lakes in the Sitgreaves and vista points along the 7,600-foot Mogollon Rim provides stunning views of the low lands to the south. The "Rim" extends two hundred miles from Flagstaff into western New Mexico. This region surrounding the town of Forest Lakes bear little resemblance to the arid, sunny deserts one usually associates with Arizona. In fact, it's characterized by cool temperatures, Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine forests, green meadows and small cool streams filled with cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout. It's a great escape from the summer heat for people who live in the lowlands.

North-central Arizona has a temperate high desert climate. A combination of high elevation and low humidity produces mild weather conditions most of the year. The average temperature in this region runs 28 degrees F. cooler than the lower desert regions. Summer temperatures are usually in the 90s, but may sometimes reach 100 degrees. Annual precipitation is just over 19 inches. Most rain occurs during the monsoon of July and August. Brief, but intense, afternoon thunderstorms are also a possibility. Winter brings cooler temperatures and an occasional dusting of snow. Elevation in northern Arizona which ranges from 2,600 feet to over 12,000 feet. Much more snow is received in the higher elevations, but even so, the relatively low latitude and plentiful sunshine quickly melts the snow.
