Chloride
lies at the foot of the Cerbat Mountains in western Arizona's Mohave County. Established in 1862, Chloride was once a booming mining town, but today, it's home to around 400 residents. Called an "almost ghost town," it boasts the oldest continually working post office in Arizona. The town contains old miner's shacks, heaps of rusting equipment left over from the mining days, one restaurant and 3 cafeterias, two saloons and several stores selling original arts, crafts and jewelry. The Chloride Historical Society maintains several old buildings in town, including the old jail, the historic train station and a museum. For such a small town, it has a lot going on. Every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, mock gunfights are held, which include The Wild Roses of Chloride, the world's only all-female gun-fighting troupe that performs hilarious skits that involve bank robberies and mock weddings. On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, a show is held based on reenactments of old west events. Chloride also holds an All Town Yard Sale the first Saturday in May and Old Miner's Day commences the last Saturday in June (and is the biggest event of the year for Chloride.) Also, don't miss the Chloride Murals just outside of town, painted on boulders by artist Roy Purcell in the 1960s. To reach Chloride, travel northwest on U.S. 93 for about 20 minutes from Kingman, Arizona. Once you leave U.S. Highway 93 on Chloride Road, it's open range territory where cattle meander about and have the right of way. Staying inside your automobile is recommended.

Northwest Arizona, on the edge of the Mojave Desert, the climate is classified as arid, desert. However, due to the higher elevation between the Colorado Plateau and the Lower Colorado River Valley, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler here, than in places located right in the desert. Summer daytime highs reach around 90 degrees F. Winter highs are generally mild, ranging in the mid to upper 50s to lower 60s. After the sun sets, winter nighttime lows can sometimes fall to near freezing or lower. This area occasionally receives a dusting of snow, though it rarely remains on the ground for longer than the mid-to-late morning. Snowfall is extremely rare in northwest Arizona. Most rainfall is received in July and August.
