Mount-Lemmon
is located in the Coronado National Forest, which is part of the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. Jutting 9,000 feet above the Arizona desert, Mount Lemmon is a completely different world from the arid desert lands below. The drive up the mountain on the winding Catalina Highway is both interesting and beautiful as you leave saguaro cactus at the bottom, past fascinating rock formations to pine and aspen groves at the top. Mount Lemmon is a wonderful place to escape the desert heat in summer, enjoy the changing leaves in the fall or a place to play in the snow in the wintertime. Outdoor activities at Mount Lemmon include hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird watching, picnicking and camping. In winter, enjoy alpine skiing, sledding and snowboarding. Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is the most southern ski area in the U.S. You can literally go skiing in the snow for the day and be back home in the warm desert before nightfall. The Coronado National Forest covers 1,780,000 acres of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Elevations range from 3,000 feet to 10,720 feet of mountains that rise dramatically from the desert floor. Views from these mountains are breathtaking. Scenic shuttle bus rides are available to Sabino Canyon - adjacent to metropolitan Tucson.

Southern Arizona, near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is generally cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water (evaporation.) Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
