Vail
is a community (census-designated place) located in Pima County in southeast Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,208. The area is in the process of incorporation to become a town. The closest city to Vail is Tucson, which is approximately 22 miles away. The Vail community is most well-known for being home to a large cave system called Colossal Cave, and for the nearby Rincon Mountain District of the Saguaro National Park. The Colossal Cave system was discovered in 1879 and contains about 3.5 miles of mapped passageways. It's a popular tourist destination in Arizona and is part of Colossal Cave Mountain Park. Aside from the caves, the park features the La Posta Quemada Ranch Museum, the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, horseback riding trails, a butterfly garden, camping and picnicking. The other main attraction near Vail, the Rincon Mountain District, is well-known for its' hiking opportunities. It's located about ten miles north of Colossal Cave Mountain Park. An 8.3-mile loop road around the Rincon Mountain District provides access to the central trails and two picnic areas in the park. At the southern boundary of the park is the Hope Camp Trails, which is frequented by equestrians. The district is also open to backcountry camping at designated sites (please note that a wilderness permit is required for overnight stays.) The campsite closest to a road is the Douglas Spring Campground, which requires a 5.9-mile hike to reach it.

Southern Arizona near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
