Sabino-Canyon
is a unique desert canyon, located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Coronado National Forest, north of Tucson. It's a popular recreational area due to the stunning scenery, fresh air, waterfalls and wildlife. Just 12 miles from downtown Tucson, Sabino Canyon is said by some to be one of the most spectacular places to visit in Arizona. A paved road weaves over three miles back into the canyon, crossing 9 stone bridges over Sabino Creek. At the end of the road are two swimming holes called Hutchs Pool and The Crack. Along the road are scenic views of the towering rock formations and grand Saguaros. There are several picnic areas designated along the road, as well as trailheads leading into other parts of the Coronado National Forest. Shuttles take visitors on the 3.8-mile road into the canyon. In fact, they are the only vehicles allowed on the road. You may also reach Upper Sabino Canyon by foot or on bicycle. Driving is allowed only on designated roads. A visitor's center is located at Sabino Canyon that has restrooms, cold drinks and information about the trails into the canyon. Maps are for sale, as are books, tapes and souvenirs about Sabino Canyon. The park is open sunrise to sunset. The Sabino Canyon Trail is open Monday through Sunday, 9:00am to 4:30pm mid-December through June. Summer hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm July through mid-December.

Sabino Canyon Weather & Climate
Southern Arizona, near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is generally cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water (evaporation.) Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
