Tucson
is located on Interstate 10 in the southern part of the state, between Phoenix and the Mexican border. This culturally fascinating city of 900,000 is the second largest city in Arizona and offers postcard image scenery with its' towering cactus forests, rolling hills and craggy mountains. Called an "authentic southwestern destination," Tucson was founded in 1775 and has grown from a dusty frontier town to the bustling metropolis it is today. The Tucson Visitors Center is located in the colorful La Placita Village, and offers maps and brochures and free information that will help with your tour of the city. An interesting blend of both the U.S. and Mexican cultures, Tucson has dozens of art galleries and museums, fine dining and nightlife. Old Town Artisans is a historic 1850s adobe building that contains a complex of shops that cover an entire city block, and the Fourth Avenue Shopping District has more than 100 boutiques and restaurants amid a historic atmosphere. Another interesting place to visit is the Tucson Museum of Art & Historic Block, which contains a permanent collection of pre-Columbian, Hispanic, Western, Asian and contemporary art, and five restored homes of the Historic El Presidio District. When hunger strikes after a day of touring, Tucson offers an exciting array of restaurants, everything from gourmet Southwestern style food to Chinese. For outdoor enthusiasts, Tucson is one of America's favorite golf destinations, and other activities include hiking, jeep tours, hot air ballooning and biking.

Tucson Weather & Climate
Southern Arizona, near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is generally cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water (evaporation.) Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
