Sonoita is located approximately 50 miles south of Tucson, and together with the communities of Elgin and Patagonia, makes up what is known as "The Mountain Empire." The beauty of the countryside has caught the attention of filmmakers who used the area as the backdrop for movies such as "Oklahoma," "Tin Cup," "The Young Guns," and "The Fantastiks." The wide-open grasslands around Sonoita are dotted with cattle, Brahma bulls, pronghorn and antelope and, surprising to some people - lush beautiful vineyards. The Sonoita and Elgin wineries have won international awards and the wines have been served at the White House since 1989. Two of the states top 100 restaurants - Café Sonoita and The Wine Country Caffe - are located here and downtown shops feature distinctive Native American jewelry and unique gifts. Neighboring Patagonia is an artists' haven, known for its' numerous art galleries, studios and gift shops. Two large, third generation, family-owned ranches surround the town of Sonoita, and annual events center around horse shows, wine tastings and events at the County Fairgrounds, such as the Sonoita Quarterhorse Show (the oldest in the country,) and the Sonoita Rodeo (held Labor Day Weekend.) The Empire Ranch at Sonoita is a 22-room adobe and wood frame building that dates to 1870 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ranch sits in the middle of the 42,000-acre Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. The area also has a number of good hiking trails and it's a popular birding destination.

Sonoita Weather & Climate

Southern Arizona near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
