Avondale
is a city of over 60,000 residents, located in the West Valley Region of Maricopa County about 15 miles west of Phoenix. It's situated on the edge of the Sonoran Desert, along the Agua Fria River, just north of its junction to the Gila River. Avondale is home to the Phoenix International Raceway, which is billed as the "world's fastest one-mile paved oval." It hosts two NASCAR events annually, which brings nearly 400,000 racing enthusiasts to the city each year. Friendship Park in Avondale is a recently completed 5.6 million-dollar youth sports complex. This facility hosts several sporting events, including soccer, baseball and softball. The park features 11 soccer fields, 4 baseball fields, a dog park and a beautiful sculpture garden with a traditional Japanese gazebo. Nearby, the White Tanks Regional Parks and Estrella Mountain offer hiking trails, horseback riding, picnicking and camping. There are numerous championship golf courses in the region and fishing, boating and gliding are just minutes away from Avondale. The Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, which includes the city of Avondale, sponsors many events throughout the year such as the Goodyear Rodeo Days in February, the Native American Festival, Cool Desert Jazz Festival and Christmas in the Park in November.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898. Please note that the weather in Arizona is quite varied, depending on the region you're visiting. While people in central Arizona are basking in sunny, mild weather in January, those in the mountains may be enjoying snow.
