Peoria
is a fast growing suburban community located in the metro Phoenix area. The Loop 101 runs the entire length of the city, connecting to I-17 to the north and I-10 to the south. The city is home to over 120,000 people and is the 4th largest city in the state in terms of incorporated area, and 9th largest in terms of population. Peoria is well known for being the spring training home for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. The Peoria Sports Complex, located just off the 101 Loop, has 10,000 seats and 12 lighted practice fields. The complex also hosts festivals, arts and crafts shows and concerts, and an Annual Fourth of July Extravaganza, as well as baseball activities. Another Peoria attraction is the Challenger Space Center of Arizona, an exciting, educational center where you can fly simulated space flight missions - a great activity for kids as well as adults and families. For outdoor activities, there are several golf courses in the area, and hiking is popular in the White Tanks or Bradshaw Mountains. Peoria is known as "The Gateway to Lake Pleasant," a regional park that is one of the finest water recreation areas in the state. The park covers 25,000 acres, is the second largest lake in Arizona and offers swimming, fishing, sailing, water skiing, a full service marina, dinner cruises and camping. For shopping, visit the Arrowhead Town Center in Peoria, which has more than 170 stores, a movie complex, and a 30-horse carousel and food court. Pioneer Days and Fall Fest are two of the special events held in the town of Peoria each year.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild to warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during summer. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. This region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
