Sun-City
is located approximately 17 miles northwest of Phoenix in Maricopa County. It's called the "quintessential retirement community,' known for the active lifestyle of its' residents. Sun City opened in 1960 as a community for those over the age of 55 who wanted to enjoy life in near perfect weather year round. It was very successful and became a model for other retirement communities around the country. Other communities, including Sun City West and Sun City Grand, have since been developed and together they are often referred to as "The Sun Cities." Golf is a way of life at Sun City. There are 17 golf courses altogether in the surrounding area. The community of Sun City alone covers 8,900 acres and 1,200 of those are golf courses. The electric golf course is a favored form of transportation around the town. There are lots of other recreational options, as well, at the town's seven recreational centers and over 350 clubs and civic organizations. Enjoy swimming, tennis, and fitness rooms with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, hiking and biking and dancing. The Sun City clubs offer everything from arts and crafts to clubs for bicyclists, motorcyclists and gardeners. Whatever your interest - you're likely to find it at Sun City, Arizona.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild to warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during summer. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. This region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
