Laveen
is located in Maricopa County just eight miles southwest of downtown Phoenix. Parts of the community lie within the city limits of Phoenix, while part is classified as an "unincorporated community" within Maricopa County. Laveen is a mostly suburban community that is situated between South Mountain and the confluence of the Gila and Salt Rivers. The part of the community that lies within Phoenix is referred to as Laveen Village. This area was first settled in 1884 by farmers and dairymen. For much of its' early history, it was isolated from Phoenix by the Salt River. Due to this, it remained self-sufficient and separated from the larger city. Later, it became less isolated with the building of more bridges across the river. Today, Laveen is becoming more and more commercialized, although some of the farms and dairies remain, so it retains its' rural feel. It's home to two, 18-hole golf courses; the Bougainvillea Golf Club (private) and the Aguila Golf Course (public). Of course, the Phoenix area is known as the "golf capital" of the nation, with more than 200 courses in the area. Other outdoor activities near Laveen include hiking, biking, horseback riding, hot air ballooning and scenic day trips to nearby mountain towns and desert. The Salt River provides boating, fishing, swimming and water skiing. Other places to visit in the area include the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo and the Phoenix Art Museum.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
