Glendale
is a residential community located on the western edge of Phoenix, just twenty minutes from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is Arizona's fourth largest city and offers a variety of amenities such as a historic downtown shopping district, museums and cultural attractions, fine dining and special events. Thunderbird Mountain Park is located on the northern edge of the city and offers 1,000 acres of desert preserve with miles of jogging, hiking and biking trails. Horseback riding and picnicking opportunities are also available. White Tank Mountain Regional Park is nearby and offers even more opportunities for hiking and biking, including Waterfall Trail, which is suitable for children. From the summit are stunning views of Arrowhead Ranch, which is a community of parks, lakes and prestigious homes. Historic Downtown Glendale is called "Arizona's Antique Capital," and boasts more than 90 shops, all within walking distance of each other. Other places to visit include the Historic Sahuaro Ranch. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Ranch is just north of downtown Glendale. It was built in 1885 and contains 17 buildings and a rose garden that are available for touring. The Cerreta Candy Company is a fun place for families to visit, and the Glendale Xeriscape Botanical Garden is considered one of the best demonstration gardens in the state, with over 1,000 varieties of desert plants. The city is also host to the Thunderbird Balloon and Air Classic, which includes aircraft exhibits, food, arts and crafts and nearly 100 hot air balloons.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
