Gilbert
lies in the southeast corner of Maricopa County, within a half-hour drive of downtown Phoenix and only 12 miles from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Incorporated in 1920, the town sits at an elevation of 1,273 and was named for William M. Gilbert, an early Valley homesteader. The town has easy access to Interstate 60. This family oriented town of 171,000 residents is one of the fastest growing communities in the country. The town's motto is "Community of Excellence," and its' citizens strive to maintain its' small town charm while at the same time promoting growth. Although not far in distance from metropolitan Phoenix, Gilbert is set apart and unique, which is why many residents choose to live here. The town boasts excellent schools, quality housing in a variety of prices and lots of recreational amenities. One of the largest rodeos in the southwest is held in Gilbert each year in November. This week long event, called Gilbert Days, includes a parade and other exciting activities that celebrate the town's heritage. Also be sure to check out the Gilbert Historical Museum, which is located inside an old schoolhouse, and contains a very interesting collection of artifacts and information about the towns past.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
