Tempe
is an urban community situated in the center of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Scottsdale borders it on the north, Chandler on the south, Mesa to the east and Phoenix to the west. Tempe's central location to the valley's extensive freeway network makes it very convenient to visiting all of metro Phoenix and other parts of Arizona. The Arizona State University, which is the fourth largest public research university in the nation, is located in Tempe. This culturally rich city is home to some really great attractions, such as the ASU Art Museum, the ASU Planetarium, the Tempe Historical Museum and the Arboretum at ASU. Add to that, numerous art galleries, theater, live music and festivals, and restaurants offering everything from Thai, Mexican and American cuisine, and you'll see why Tempe is a top Arizona vacation destination. Shopping is just as diverse in Tempe, with outlet malls, specialty boutiques and unique gift shops. Tempe Town Lake is a popular recreational destination, and the site of many festivals, concerts and fireworks displays. The lake also offers fishing and boating, kayaking, rowing, picnicking and hiking. At the heart of Tempe Town Lake is Tempe Beach Park, a 25-acre park that was originally developed in 1931 and completely renovated in 1999. The park includes the 1.3 million-dollar Splash Playground for children, a historic ball field, amphitheater, food vendors and boat cruises on the lake. Downtown Tempe is also very pedestrian friendly with shady brick walkways and historical buildings and landmarks.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
