Mesa
is 15 miles east of Phoenix, part of the Phoenix-Mesa metroplex and Arizona's third largest city. Mesa is the Spanish word for "table top," which describes a flat-topped, raised area of land. The city of Mesa's beginnings include stories of Indians, Spanish expeditions, early American explorers and Mormon migrations. The first settlers actually built homes on a mesa above the surrounding area. The town was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1883, and has been booming ever since, and is now one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Mesa is home to world-renowned golf courses set against rugged mountains and the natural beauty of the desert. Other outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, rafting and tubing on the Salt River, horseback riding, biking, tennis - even hot air ballooning. Mesa is home to a number of interesting museums. The Mesa Southwest Museum explores the rich history of the southwest from dinosaurs to conquistadors. At the Mesa Historical Museum, you will learn all about the Hohokam Indians, explorers and Mormon settlers of the area. For children, the Arizona Museum for Youth is an introduction to the world of fine arts and offers hands-on activities that stimulates and encourages creativity in its' young visitors. The city of Mesa has all this, and so much more, including fine dining in restaurants where every type of international cuisine imaginable is offered, excellent shopping opportunities and nightlife.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
