Phoenix
is located in south-central Arizona and is both the state capital and largest city in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,445,632. The Phoenix metropolitan area, known as The Valley of the Sun, has a population of about four million people and is the 6th largest city in the United States. The climate in Phoenix invites year round outdoor activities, with temperatures at a more comfortable level November through April. Vacation resorts are plentiful throughout the valley and you'll also find exquisite spas, trendy shopping, fine dining, exciting nightlife, and an enriching arts scene. There are more than 200 golf courses in the area (Arizona ranks highest in the number of golf courses per capita of any western state,) and other outdoor activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, hot air balloons and scenic day trips to nearby mountain towns and the Sonoran Desert. Camelback Mountain, the city's highest point, is an imposing landmark that towers over the city and is a popular place for hiking. Other recreational opportunities can be found in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve and the Piestewa Peak Park Recreation Area. The Salt River and Verde River lie east and northeast of Phoenix and provide beautiful mountain lake scenery and opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming and water skiing. Other places to visit include the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo, the Heard Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum. Downtown Phoenix is an impressive cultural center with opera, ballet, symphony and theater. Interstates 17 and 10 are the main highways through the city of Phoenix.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during the year. On average, south-central Arizona has an average annual rainfall of 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Dust storms are also possible during the summer. They form from monsoon storm "outflows," or sudden gusts of wind. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and may produce significant rain - but it's rare. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
