Surprise is located in the "Valley of the Sun," along U.S. Highway 60 and State Highway 93, just northwest of Phoenix. According to the Department of Economic Survey Data, Surprise is the fastest growing city in the state of Arizona. Founded in 1938 when it was little more than a sleepy little farming community, today a new home is completed in Surprise almost every hour. Part of the city's appeal lies in its' beautiful surroundings - set against the desert landscape with brilliant blue skies and gorgeous sunsets. It's known as the "Cactus League Spring Training Home" of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers. The 132-acre Surprise Recreation Campus features a 10,562-seat stadium, a regional library, state-of-the-art aquatic center, recreation center, large playground and dog park and 37-acre park with an urban fishing lake. A 25-court championship tennis complex with center court seating for 5,000 is also planned for the Recreation Campus. Hiking and biking is available year round in the nearby White Tank Regional Park and eight golf courses are located in Surprise. Special events in the community include the annual Surprise Party, Fourth of July Celebration, Movies in the Stadium and Performances in the Park. Nearby attractions include the West Valley Art Museum, the Phoenix Zoo, Speedworld Motorplex, the Wildlife World Zoo, Lake Pleasant Regional Park and the Challenger Space Center. More than 54,000 new residential dwelling units are planned for construction in the Surprise area over the next ten years.

Surprise Weather & Climate

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild to warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during summer. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. This region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
