Sun-City-West
is located about 20 miles northwest of Phoenix and has a population of about 24,000 residents. It's a master-planned community for people age 55 and older, who enjoy an active lifestyle. Sun City West was developed in 1978 when all of the available land in neighboring Sun City, which is two miles east, was taken. Together with Sun City, Sun City West has been rated the third best location out of 100 top-rated retirement communities in the U.S. Sun City West has eight golf courses ("a different course for every day,") and four recreational centers. The more than 100 clubs offer everything from sports, arts and crafts to card playing and dance. There are clubs for bicyclists, motorcyclists, gardeners, birding, fishing and dancing. The community has two 11,000 square foot ballrooms that are also used for large meetings. Among the arts and crafts clubs offered are basketry, model railroading, photography, stained glass and much more. In addition to all of this, Sun City West has six swimming pools, 30 bowling lanes, 27 tennis courts, state-of-the-art exercise equipment, mini golf and both indoor and outdoor walking tracks. It would be difficult to find an activity not offered at Sun City West. Even dogs have their own "Doggie Park." A network of freeways makes access from Sun City West to all parts of the valley easy. Sedona is about two hours north and Tucson is about two hours south of Sun City West.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild to warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during summer. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. This region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
