Rio-Rico
is a small community located in southern Arizona, about ten miles from the Mexico border. It's approximately 55 miles south of Tucson. As of the 2010 census, the population of Rio Rico was 18,962. Rio Rico is a planned community that sits at the foot of the San Cayetano Mountains, which soar above the Santa Cruz Valley. The community is 3,500 feet above sea level and enjoys much cooler temperatures than Phoenix and other central/northwestern parts of the state. Rio Rico is also home to an upscale hotel/resort. With its' cooler climate and close proximity to many attractions, Rio Rico makes a great weekend escape for people in nearby Tucson and Phoenix. Patagonia Lake State Park is located just 20 minutes away and provides boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking. This region is well-known for its' fantastic birdwatching. Bordering Patagonia Lake State Park is Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, which provides guided hikes and birdwatching tours. Also in the area, the wetlands along the Santa Cruz River provide a refuge to many species of wetland birds, ducks and herons. Rio Rico also has some of the best golf in the state. Other nearby attractions include Tumacacori Mission, Pena Blanca Lake and Recreation Area, Historic Nogales and San Xavier del Bac Mission.

South-central Arizona, on the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is generally cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of evaporation. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is also often seen at this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
