Sahuarita
covers a 30-square mile area in the historic Santa Cruz Valley, just 15 miles from the city of Tucson. It's a newly incorporated town, (1994,) although it is surrounded by early Spanish missions, frontier outposts and old mines. The town shares a southern border with the retirement community of Green Valley and offers direct access to Tucson and Mexico via Interstate 19. At an elevation of 2,844 feet, Sahuarita is known for its' natural beauty and stunning views of the desert vegetation and majestic mountains. There are several family residential areas in Sahuarita, as well as three master-planned communities - Rancho Sahuarita, Quail Creek and Madera Highlands. Tubac, located south of Sahuarita, is an old Spanish settlement that is now an active artist's colony, and the San Xavier del Bac Mission is located 14 miles north of Sahuarita. The Titan II Missile Museum, which is the only one of its kind in the world, is located in Sahuarita. Once a base for Titan II missiles, (from 1963 to 1982,) all have now been deactivated and visitors are allowed to tour the control room and the missile silo. To reach the museum, take I-19 south to exit 69 and head west for about half a mile until you see the signs on the right. The Titan Missile Museum is open every day, year round. For outdoor recreational activities, Sahuarita is near Pena Blanca Lake, Arivaca Lake and Madera Canyon

Southern Arizona near the Mexico border, has a desert climate, but is cooler and wetter than the central desert region due to its' higher elevation. Southern Arizona averages 11 inches of rain per year, but also experiences a high level of what is called evapotranspiration, or loss of water. Most of the rainfall occurs during the monsoon months of July and August. Flash floods are possible during the monsoon, and dramatic lightening is sometimes seen during this time. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Early summer has low humidity and clear skies; mid-to- late summer has higher humidity, cloudy skies and occasional rain. Winters are mild in southern Arizona, and the area generally averages one hard freeze per season. Snow is rare, but has been known to fall; usually just a light dusting that melts quickly.
