Roosevelt-Lake is the largest lake in central Arizona, located about 80 miles northeast of Phoenix. It has 112 miles of shoreline and 22,000 acres of surface water. Roosevelt Lake is just four miles upstream from Apache Lake and lies almost entirely within Gila County. A small portion is in Maricopa County. The lake is actually a reservoir that was formed when the Theodore Roosevelt Dam was built on the Salt River in 1911, and named after then President Theodore Roosevelt. At that time, Roosevelt Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. A beautiful two-lane, single span, steel arch bridge carries state route 188 over the lake. The bridge was completed in 1990. Roosevelt Lake lies within the Tonto National Forest, and over the years, it's become a popular recreational lake. Fishing is a popular sport, and the lake is stocked with crappie, sunfish, flathead, channel catfish, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. There are also several hiking trails in the area. Other activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, picnicking, rock hounding, rafting, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with hot summers and warm winters. On most days from May through September, the temperature reaches or exceeds 100 degrees F. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. Fog is rare and this region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898. Please note that the weather in Arizona is quite varied, depending on the region you're visiting. While people in central Arizona are basking in sunny, mild weather in January, those in the mountains may be enjoying snow.
