Apache-Junction
is a desert community located at the 2,070-foot level, just 35 miles directly east of Phoenix. Easily reached via Highway 60 (the Superstition Freeway,) Apache Junction has a pleasant "hometown" feel and a permanent population of around 36,000 residents. However, the city welcomes over 35,000 seasonal residents each year from mid-October to mid-April. The town is the gateway to the legend-filled Superstition Mountains, where stories abound of lost treasure and hidden gold from the Spaniard Peralta to Fray Marcos de Niza. The historic Apache Trail, or Highway 88, is the entrance to the mountains. Hiking trails originating at the Lost Dutchman State Park take hikers to elevations over 5,000 feet and range in difficulty from moderate to very difficult. Continuing along the Apache Trail is Canyon Lake, the first in a series of lakes downstream from the Roosevelt Dam, where boating, fishing and hiking, horseback riding and camping are available. Other places of interest to visit include Tortilla Flat, a stage coach stop of yesteryear, the Tonto National Monument, where visitors can hike up to ancient cliff dwellings dating back to 1400 AD and the Besh-Ba-Gowah Archeological Park Ruins and Museum. The Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Arizona's oldest botanical garden is located via Highway 60. Superstition Mountain and the town of Apache Junction are also home to some of Arizona's premier golf courses.

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate. The area just east of Phoenix near the Superstitious Mountains, has hot, sunny summers and mild winters. Temperatures in the summer often exceed 100 degrees F., with a few days each year generally reaching 110 F. The higher altitude in the eastern portion of the wilderness area has slightly lower temperatures than the western portion. The elevation in this region is approximately 2,000 feet above sea level. Average annual rainfall is about 8 inches. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms are also possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. Snow of any measurable accumulation is rare.
