Wickenburg lies 60 miles northwest of Phoenix in the northern Sonoran Desert, where State Route 60 intersects with State Route 93. The town's permanent population is around 5,000, but it almost doubles in the winter months when seasonal residents return. A few light industries are in Wickenburg, but tourism plays a large role in the town's economy. Nestled in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains along the Hassayampa River, the town of Wickenburg was once known as the "Dude Ranch Capital of the World." Although there are still a few dude ranches in the area, the town is known more today for it's excellent golf courses. With its' year round warm climate (which is a generally a few degrees cooler than nearby Phoenix due to its' elevation,) spending the day playing golf in Wickenburg is a very pleasurable activity. Other outdoor recreational activities in the area include hiking, horseback riding, fishing and birding. Wickenburg is home to The Desert Caballeros Western Museum, which is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Arizona's history and art. The museum showcases acclaimed collections of Western art and artifacts and special events are offered throughout the year. Although not a "flashy" western town, Main Street in Wickenburg does have several very well preserved buildings from the 1890s through the 1920s, including the old Santa Fe train station that has been converted into the Chamber of Commerce building.

Wickenburg Weather & Climate

Southwest Arizona has a desert climate that is arid. Winters are extremely mild and summers are extremely hot. Some of the driest weather in the U.S. is found in the extreme southwest of the state, which received less than 3 inches of rain per year. Thunder and lightening storms are possible, though not common. The heaviest thunderstorms usually occur in the mountainous regions. Snow is very rare in southwest Arizona. Southwest Arizona also receives more sunshine than almost any other area of the U.S. year round. When traveling to Arizona, please remember that the weather across the state is quite varied, depending on the region and elevation. While people in central Arizona are basking in mild weather in January, those in the mountains may be enjoying snow.
