Carefree is part of the "Desert Foothills" region, just 15 miles northeast of Phoenix and directly north of the city of Scottsdale. It is one of the earliest planned communities in the state, founded in the 1950s. The Tonto National Forest borders the town to the north and east and the Mazatzal Mountains and Sonoran Desert are to the south. Carefree's town motto is "Home of Cowboys and Caviar, Where the Old West Meets the New." This describes the town's unique blend of rural, recreational fun and resort style living. Covering just over 8 square miles, Carefree has streets with names like Tranquil Trail, Ho and Hum Roads and Easy Street. Visitors enjoy gorgeous golf courses, fine dining, specialty shops and upscale boutiques. Carefree is also home to the third largest working sundial in the Western Hemisphere. This special symbol of the town is located in the middle of the business section in the downtown area, and not only serves to keep time but helps to heat water for the Darlington-Palmer Building. Along with its' sister city, Cave Creek, Carefree has a thriving arts community with hundreds of artists and numerous galleries. Special events include the Fiesta Days in April, a Fireworks Extravaganza in July and Oktober West Fest in October. Nearby attractions include the Cave Creek Mistress Mine, Cave Creek Museum and Bartlett Lake, which offers hiking, swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing.

Carefree Weather & Climate

South-central Arizona has a subtropical desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild to warm winters. This region has some of the hottest summer daytime temperatures of any area in the United States. Highs top 110 degrees F. an average of 18 days during summer. On average, this part of the state is sunny 85 percent of the year, with an average annual rainfall total being 8.3 inches. March is the wettest month and June is the driest. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but occur most often during the monsoon from July to early September. Storms moving inland from the Pacific Ocean are possible in winter and occasionally produce significant rain. This region usually experiences only five days per year when the temperature drops to freezing. Snow of an accumulation of 0.1 inches or greater has occurred in central Arizona only eight times since 1898.
