Clarkdale
is a historic small town located in Yavapai County in northwestern Arizona. The population is approximately 3,700. Clarkdale began as a mining town, but is now a mostly retirement community. Not just any mining town, however, Clarkdale was an early example of a planned community, founded in 1912 by William A. Clark as a company town for his United Verde Copper Mine. The town was one of the most modern mining towns of its' kind in the world, with electricity, telephones, telegraph services, sewer and spring water services. The town center and business district of Clarkdale were built in the Spanish Colonial style. The entire original town site is a National Historic District. Other attractions in Clarkdale include the Verde Canyon Railroad, which is a scenic excursion train that takes passengers on a four-hour round trip through the protected ecosystem of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area and Verde River. The downtown business district in Clarkdale offers restaurants, shops, taverns, an art gallery, the Clarkdale Historical Society and Museum, and an a City Information Center. Free concerts are held in the Clarkdale Park every year, May through October. Nearby, the Tuzigoot National Monument, a large 800-year-old Sinagua pueblo ruin, is located between Clarkdale and Cottonwood, Arizona. A museum is on the site and it's surrounded by hiking trails. The Prescott National Forest is located to the west of Clarkdale and the Coconino National Forest is to the east.

Northwest Arizona, on the edge of the Mojave Desert, the climate is classified as arid, desert. However, due to the higher elevation between the Colorado Plateau and the Lower Colorado River Valley, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler here, than in places located right in the desert. Summer daytime highs reach around 90 degrees F. Winter highs are generally mild, ranging in the mid to upper 50s to lower 60s. After the sun sets, winter nighttime lows can sometimes fall to near freezing or lower. This area occasionally receives a dusting of snow, though it rarely remains on the ground for longer than the mid-to-late morning. Snowfall is extremely rare in northwest Arizona. Most rainfall is received in July and August.
