Jerome
is a historic copper mining town located in Yavapai County between Prescott and Flagstaff, Arizona. The estimated population of the town is 450 full-time residents. Perched high on the top of Cleopatra Hill at the 5,200-foot elevation level, Jerome was once the fourth largest city in the Arizona Territory. It grew from a few miners' tents in the late 1800s, to a peak population of 15,000 in the 1920s. The town of Jerome became a true wild west town, at one time proclaimed as "the wickedest town in the west." The town had its' ups and downs, with the Great Depression of the 1930s slowing the mining operation. World War II, however, brought an increased demand for copper, so things picked up in the town. After the war, things changed once again, and the copper mine in Jerome closed in 1953. As a result, the population of the town dropped to an all time low of 50 people. On its' way to becoming a ghost town, the remaining few residents decided to promote Jerome as a historic tourist/ghost town. In 1967 it was designated a National Historic Landmark, and today, Jerome is a thriving tourist and artists' community. The town is enchanting for those who love history, with its' many abandoned and refurbished buildings and a large mining museum. There are several bed and breakfasts in Jerome, along with a variety of restaurants, two local bars and more than 30 art galleries and working artists' studios. Special events in town include the Jerome Home Tour in May, the First Saturday Art Walk, the Sedona Plein Air Festival and an annual Halloween Dance.

Northwest Arizona, on the edge of the Mojave Desert, the climate is classified as arid, desert. However, due to the higher elevation between the Colorado Plateau and the Lower Colorado River Valley, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler here, than in places located right in the desert. Summer daytime highs reach around 90 degrees F. Winter highs are generally mild, ranging in the mid to upper 50s to lower 60s. After the sun sets, winter nighttime lows can sometimes fall to near freezing or lower. This area occasionally receives a dusting of snow, though it rarely remains on the ground for longer than the mid-to-late morning. Snowfall is extremely rare in northwest Arizona. Most rainfall is received in July and August.
