Mayer is an unincorporated community located in Yavapai County approximately 25 miles northwest of Phoenix. The town lies in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains near Big Bug Creek on Highway 69, about five miles from Interstate 17. This community was founded by Joseph Mayer, who established a store and saloon and a Wells Fargo Stage stop here along the line between Phoenix and Prescott. The town of Mayer soon became a trading center for the surrounding agricultural and mining areas. Today it's a cool mountain town with an old west feel, a peaceful retreat for those wishing to escape the heat of the cities. The population is approximately 1,500 and the town sits at an elevation of 4,370 feet. The 1.2 million-acre Prescott National Forest is just west of town. A unique attraction near the town is the Arcosanti or "Urban Laboratory," which is a community developed by Italian architect, Paolo Soleri. This futuristic self-sufficient community offers tours that give visitors an inside look an amazing structure and way of life. A gift shop is on site for visitors. The town of Mayer is also home to an annual Mayer Daze Celebration each June.

Mayer Weather & Climate

Northwest Arizona on the edge of the Mojave Desert, the climate is classified as arid, desert. However, due to the higher elevation between the Colorado Plateau and the Lower Colorado River Valley, temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler here, than in places located right in the desert. Summer daytime highs reach around 90 degrees F. Winter highs are generally mild, ranging in the mid to upper 50s to lower 60s. After the sun sets, winter nighttime lows can sometimes fall to near freezing or lower. This area occasionally receives a dusting of snow, though it rarely remains on the ground for longer than the mid-to-late morning. Snowfall is extremely rare in northwest Arizona. Most rainfall is received in July and August.
