Flagstaff
is a small city nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks in northern Arizona, right at the intersection of Interstates 17 and 40. It is the county seat for Coconino County, and is surrounded by the Coconino National Forest, which is the world's largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest. Flagstaff is a "different" Arizona. It's comprised of just over 64 square miles and at nearly 7,000 feet, it has one of the highest elevations of any city in the U.S. This means Flagstaff residents enjoy four distinct seasons and moderate summer temperatures that average twenty degrees less than Phoenix. The winter brings an average annual snowfall of 99 inches, making it ideal for skiers, ice skaters and snowboarders. Spring brings wildflowers to the mountains along Flagstaff's many hiking trails and autumn is gorgeous with the changing colors of the aspen leaves. The city of Flagstaff is known as the "City of Seven Wonders," due to its' easy access to the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, the San Francisco Peaks and the Wupatki National Monument. Other attractions include the Arboretum at Flagstaff, the Arizona Historical Society/Pioneer Museum and the Lowell Observatory, famous for its discovery of the planet, Pluto. Flagstaff has more than 200 restaurants, dozens of affordable accommodations and fun nightspots. It's definitely a place of small town charm combined with big city amenities.

Northern Arizona, in the mountainous region near Flagstaff, has a dry continental climate with four distinct seasons. A combination of high elevation and low humidity produces mild weather conditions most of the year. Although it's only 150 miles from the desert, the average temperature runs 28 degrees F. cooler due to the higher elevation. Temperatures throughout the year fall dramatically after sunset and winter nights are cold. Average annual snowfall is 100.3 inches, making this region one of the snowiest in the U.S. Even so, the area's relatively low latitude and plentiful sunshine quickly melts the snow. During the monsoon of July and August, brief, but intense, afternoon thunderstorms are possible. This region averages 276 days per year without precipitation.
