Mormon-Lake
is the largest natural lake in Arizona - even though during droughts, it can, at times, be dry. However, most of the time there is water in the lake and it makes an excellent place to fish, boat, camp, picnic and birdwatch. It is located 29 miles southeast of Flagstaff at 7,000 feet elevation. This is a beautiful area of ponderosa pines and pinyon, juniper woodlands, small lakes and broad prairies. It is also abundant in wildlife, such as bald eagles and ospreys, Pronghorn antelope and elk. There is a small resort located on Mormon Lakes western shore where you can rent recreational equipment, such as mountain bikes, snowmobiles and cross-country skies. There are developed campsites in the area and excellent hiking trails which lead to panoramic views of the lake and surrounding area. Other things to do at Mormon Lake include golf, off-road ATV tours, rafting and kayaking and horseback riding among the cool Ponderosa Pines. To reach Mormon Lake, drive south from Flagstaff for 25 miles on Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) to the Forest Road 90 intersection. Turn west on FR 90 and drive about four miles to the lake. Nearby Flagstaff is a charming town with more than 200 restaurants, shopping, nightlife and affordable lodging. It is called the "City of Seven Wonders" due to its close proximity to the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, the San Francisco Peaks and the Wupatki National Monument. All are easy day trips from Mormon Lake.

Mormon Lake Weather & Climate

North-central Arizona has a temperate high desert climate. A combination of high elevation and low humidity produces mild weather conditions most of the year. The average temperature in this region runs 28 degrees F. cooler than the lower desert regions. Summer temperatures are usually in the 90s, but may sometimes reach 100 degrees. Annual precipitation is just over 19 inches. Most rain occurs during the monsoon of July and August. Brief, but intense, afternoon thunderstorms are also a possibility. Winter brings cooler temperatures and an occasional dusting of snow. Elevation in northern Arizona which ranges from 2,600 feet to over 12,000 feet. Much more snow is received in the higher elevations, but even so, the relatively low latitude and plentiful sunshine quickly melts the snow.
