Williams is located in north central Arizona, at the base of the Bill Williams Mountain in the Kaibab National Forest, near the city of Flagstaff. It is known as "The Gateway to the Grand Canyon," and offers the shortest route to the Canyon via Interstate 40. Williams (both the city and the mountain) were named for a famous master trapper and scout on the Santa Fe Trail, whose name was William S. "Bill" Williams. The historic district was once a bustling frontier town with saloons and bordellos. Today, visitors stroll brick sidewalks where remnants of the early days still exist in the buildings and shops of downtown. Williams is home to the Grand Canyon Railway & Resort, where rides to the Grand Canyon are offered daily on trains pulled by old steam engines or 1950s era diesel engines. The village of Williams has a charming small town atmosphere, yet offers large town amenities with more than 1,500 hotel rooms and dozens of restaurants. With its location at the 6,700-foot elevation level, and in the largest stand of Ponderosa Pines in the world, outdoor recreational opportunities abound, including Alpine skiing at the Williams Ski Area. Throughout the month of December, the town sponsors a "Mountain Village Holiday," with rides on "The Polar Express," a parade of lights, shopping opportunities, carolers and a residential holiday lighting contest.

Williams Weather & Climate

The Northern Arizona  mountain region has a dry, continental climate. Although it's only 150 miles from the desert, the average temperature runs 28 degrees F. cooler due to the higher elevation. July is the warmest month of the year, December is the coldest, and August is the wettest month. Temperatures throughout the year, even in the summertime, drop dramatically after sunset and winter nights are generally cold. Average annual snowfall is 66.6 inches, making it one of the snowiest in the U.S. Even so, the area's low latitude and plentiful sunshine quickly melts the snow. During the monsoon of July and August, brief, but intense, afternoon thunderstorms are possible. This region averages 276 days per year without precipitation and lots of sunshine.
